Scottish born pianist Andrew Johnston has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Britain and abroad, including concerto performances of Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto no.1, Grieg Piano Concerto, and Beethoven Piano Concerto no.3 in Kiev, Ukraine. He has also performed duo repertoire such as the Rachmaninov Cello Sonata with Jane Rimer, Franck Violin Sonata with Harriet McKenzie, and is currently working with the Rose Street Quartet on a piano quintet concert series featuring the Elgar, Shostakovich and Dohnanyi Piano Quintets. He has also worked with the Edinburgh Quartet, most recently on a CD showcase of new compositions by PhD students and lecturers from the University of Edinburgh. He gained his Masters Degree in Musicology in 2006 from the University of Edinburgh, and has participated in masterclasses with Norma Fisher, Berndt Goetzke, Leon McCawley, Radoslav Kvapil, Yonty Solomon, and others. In October 2007 he gave a recital and masterclass in Latvia as part of a course on Piano Pedagogy, and he was a tutor in keyboard at the University of Edinburgh from 2001 until 2008. He was also a member of the Chethams International Piano Summer School faculty in 2009. He is currently teaching piano and chamber music at Stewart’s Melville and Mary Erskine Schools in Edinburgh, whilst maintaining a thriving private teaching practise.
Engagements for 2010 include recitals at the Glasgow Art club, Westbourne Music Society (with Violist Jessica Beeston), Bute Music Society, and a performance of Chopin’s Piano Concerto no.1 with the Edinburgh Chamber Orchestra. Andrew is also the secretary of the Piano section of the Edinburgh Festival of Music Speech and Dance, and is the organiser of this years Scottish Round of the EPTA Piano competition.
