Sarah Murphy

Sarah Murphy is an academic, teacher, and performer - she has been a teacher of Academic Music at Chethams's for the past three years, but also contributes to the School of Keyboard studies, taking classes in twentieth century performance techniques and adjudicating various competitions. Prior to her time at Chetham's, Sarah worked as a Lecturer in Music at the Royal Northern College of Music, teaching undergraduates and postgraduates in a range of historical, performance practise, harmony, counterpoint, and analysis classes. She is still involved with the Pre-Sessional Summer course for international students at the college, teaching Introduction to Musicology sessions. Whilst working as a lecturer at the RNCM, she completed her doctorate from Cardiff University under the supervision of Professor John Tyrrell, the title of which is Czech Piano Music from Smetana to Janacek. Prior to her doctoral studies, she completed her MMus in Advanced Performance at the RNCM and, before this, achieved first class honours from the University of Nottingham. Her academic interests are in twentieth and twenty-first century music, and she is particularly keen on exploring contemporary repertoire for the piano. She has performed throughout the UK as a soloist and an accompanist, and has also undertaken examining for the ABRSM. Sarah also teaches piano at the Junior RNCM as well as having a number of private piano students throughout the region.
