Date: Thursday 23 August 2018
Start Time: 19.30
Event Type: Recital
Featuring: Murray McLachlan
The first Stoller Hall recital of part two features the Passacaglia on DSCH by Ronald Stevenson performed by artistic director Murray McLachlan.
The composer himself said of McLachlan's performance
"He has no greater appreciator of his pianism than myself".
'This recording presents an endorsement of Murray McLachlan's pianism by Ronald Stevenson. Small wonder: the performance is thrilling. His approach to the work somehow manages to combine an improvisatory freshness and a sense of the inevitability of the form. McLachlan has long been a champion of Stevenson's music (recording the two Piano Concertos, for example, on Olympia OCD 429), and he plays it here as if mastering its praeternatural difficulties were as natural as running your fingers through your hair.' International Piano
'This was quite superb pianism, allied to a structural command that knows no peers. The Passacaglia is an out-and-out masterpiece, which will be played long after much music of the last 50 years is justifiably forgotten.'
